And honestly? It’s one of the biggest worries for so many families.
Choosing outfits for multiple people can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already organising little ones, nap times and everything else that comes with family life. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated.
The most beautiful photos aren’t about perfectly coordinated outfits or expensive new clothes. They’re about connection. The cuddles, the laughter, the quiet moments and all the little in-between memories that make your family unique.
Choosing clothing that feels comfortable, complements each other and reflects your family is all you really need.

Choose One Outfit You Love
Instead of trying to dress everyone at once, start with one outfit you absolutely love.
Once you’ve chosen one piece, it’s much easier to build the rest of the family’s outfits around it by pulling colours and textures together.
Whether that’s a beautiful linen dress, a cosy knit jumper or your favourite neutral shirt, having one starting point takes away so much of the guesswork.
Remember, you don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe. Some of the most beautiful sessions I’ve photographed have featured well-loved pieces people already had hanging in their wardrobe.
Coordinate Instead of Matching
Remember when every family photo involved white shirts and blue jeans?
Thankfully we’ve moved on from that.
Instead of everyone wearing exactly the same thing, choose colours that complement each other. This creates a softer, more natural look and allows each person’s personality to shine through while still feeling beautifully cohesive.

Your session isn’t about standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera.
We’ll be walking.

Rocking your newborn.
Chasing toddlers.
Laughing together.
Choose outfits you can comfortably move in so you can focus on each other instead of adjusting clothing throughout the session.
The more relaxed you feel, the more natural your photos will be.
Keep It Simple
Simple clothing almost always photographs best.
Neutral knitwear, linen shirts, cotton dresses, relaxed button-ups, cosy jumpers and well-fitted basics all work beautifully together.
Avoid clothing with:
Large logos
Bright graphics
Neon colours
Characters or wording across the front
The less distraction there is from clothing, the more your connection becomes the focus of your gallery.
Dressing Little Ones
Little ones are happiest when they’re comfortable.
Choose clothing they can move, climb, cuddle and play in without constantly needing adjustments.
Soft knits, rompers, cotton dresses, linen overalls and simple neutral outfits are always beautiful choices.
And don’t worry about shoes.
Bare feet are one of my favourite little details, especially during in-home sessions or on the beach.
Think About Your Location
The location of your session can help guide your outfit choices.
For in-home newborn sessions, soft neutral tones, cosy knits and relaxed clothing work beautifully with natural light and create a calm, intimate feel.
For outdoor family sessions around Newcastle or the Hunter Valley, earthy colours like olive, rust, cream and soft blue blend beautifully with nature and photograph wonderfully in every season.
The goal is always for your clothing to complement the environment rather than compete with it.
It’s the Little Details
Before your session, it’s worth taking a quick look at the little things that often get forgotten.
If you’re happy to, consider removing smart watches, emptying phones and keys from pockets, and choosing simple jewellery that won’t distract from your photos.
These tiny details aren’t essential, but they can help create a cleaner, more timeless look.

At the end of the day, your family photos aren’t about the clothes.
They’re about the way your little one reaches for your hand.
The sleepy newborn cuddles.
